How to Make Your Own Nature Top

from $15.00

Introducing the “How to Make Your Own Nature Top” Tutorial!

A Nature Top (as defined by me, Justice McNeil, maker of Thread + Sprout), is a boxy top that is made of a few different colors of curved color blocking to look like hills, flowing mist, the layers of the ocean, or whatever else you have in mind.

This tutorial will teach you how to make a nature top using a pre-existing pattern for a simple boxy top. Please note, this tutorial does not include a pattern but will teach you how to make your own pattern for the curved color sections using a pattern of your choosing. I have included a few suggestions of boxy top patterns in the written instructions in the tutorial but you can also find one you like by googling “boxy top sewing pattern” or if you’re feeling adventurous, you can self-draft a pattern!

If you want to add some cute appliqué mushrooms to your nature top, check out the Mushroom Appliqué Tutorial!

  • While sewing a basic boxy top is fairly beginner-friendly, sewing curved lines can be tricky. I recommend anyone who wants to, to try it out but be patient with yourself and know that it may take a few tries :) It may be good to practice a bit before you cut into your nice/favorite fabric.

  • A light to mid-weight woven fabric like a cotton or linen works best.

    • an 11-minute video of me walking through the steps to make a nature top

    • a PDF of the written instructions

  • After purchasing, you will receive an email with a link to download the PDF and a link to the video.

I want everyone who wants to to be able to make their own nature top, so this tutorial is offered at a sliding scale price. Please pay what you are able and what feels fair to you :) If you aren’t able to afford the minimum price ($15), please reach out via the contact form on my site.

Can’t wait to see what you make!
