How to Make Your Own Scrappy Patchy Top

Introducing the “How to Make Your Own Scrappy Patchy Top” Tutorial!

If you sew at all, you will find that you end up with a scrap collection that you may or may not know what to do with. There are a lot of different “scrap busting” projects - from stuffing pillows and bolsters with them to using them for quilts.

One of my favorite ways to use up smaller scraps is to make what I call “Scrappy Patchy” clothing, or “Trash Prevention Clothes”. In this tutorial, I will teach you how to make a “Scrappy Patchy” top using a pre-existing pattern of your choosing. I’ve included some pattern recommendations that would work well for this technique but this tutorial does not include a pattern.

If you want to add some cute appliqué mushrooms to your Scrappy Patchy top, check out the Mushroom Appliqué Tutorial!

  • I’d say this technique is good for any skill level! It does take a long time though so please make sure you are well hydrated and take lots of breaks whenever needed.

  • Fabric: A light to mid-weight woven fabric like a cotton or linen works best. I do not recommend using knits for this technique.

Machines: You will need a sewing machine and a way to finish your seams, which could be with a serger or by using a zig zag stitch on the raw edges

    • an 5-minute video of me walking through the steps to make a nature top

    • a PDF of the written instructions
